Do I Need a Visa for India to Do the Golden Triangle?

Planning
The short answer

Most foreign visitors need some form of permission to enter India before they travel, and the Golden Triangle is no exception. The rules differ by passport and change over time, so check the official Indian government visa portal and your own government's travel advice. Apply well before your flight.

Visa rules are the one part of planning we cannot answer for you with certainty. They depend on the passport you hold, they are updated from time to time, and a page written months ago may already be out of date. That is why this guide explains the process rather than quoting rules.

What we can do is tell you where to look, how early to start, what to have ready and how your visa fits around a Delhi, Agra and Jaipur trip. Treat the official sources as the final word and this page as a map of the steps.

The short version for most travellers

If you are not an Indian citizen, assume you need permission to enter before you board your flight. For many nationalities this is arranged online in advance. For others it is handled through an embassy, consulate or an approved application centre. A small number of travellers may be exempt. Which group you fall into depends on your passport, not on where you live.

Do not rely on what a friend did last year, or on a forum post. Rules, categories and processes have changed in the past and may change again. The only reliable answer comes from the official Indian government visa portal and from the travel advice published by your own government, which usually has a section on entry requirements for India.

We are a tour team, not an immigration service, so we cannot tell you which visa suits your situation or confirm that an application will be accepted. We can plan your days around your confirmed arrival date once you have your permission in hand.

Where to check, and what to check

Start with the official Indian government visa portal. Use the address you reach through your own government's travel page or through a search for the portal by name, and be careful with lookalike websites. Some unofficial sites charge extra for forms you can complete directly on the official one. If a site looks hurried or asks for more than the official process does, step back and verify.

Then read your own government's travel advice for India. It usually lists entry requirements, passport rules and any health documents asked of arriving travellers. It also tends to flag changes sooner than guidebooks do.

When you read the rules, look for four things: whether you need permission before arrival, which category suits a holiday, how long the permission is valid for and whether it allows the number of entries you need. If you plan to leave India and return, for example for a side trip, check that as well.

Passport and documents in general terms

Your passport must be valid for a reasonable period beyond your arrival, and it needs blank pages for stamps. The exact period is set by the rules at the time, so confirm it on the official sources instead of trusting a rule of thumb. If your passport is close to expiring, renewing it first is usually simpler than trying to squeeze by.

Expect to provide a recent photograph that meets the portal's specification, a scan of your passport details page and information about your planned stay, such as where you will be and when you arrive. Have your first night's hotel details and your onward or return flight information to hand, because applications often ask for them.

The name on your visa, your passport and your flight booking should match exactly. A small mismatch can cause trouble at the airport. Check spellings, middle names and date formats before you submit anything.

When to apply

Apply well before you travel. Processing times vary and are not guaranteed, and a delay in your own country or at the portal is hard to fix once flights are paid for. Many travellers start as soon as their dates are fixed, and we would suggest the same.

Do not apply so early that the permission lapses before you arrive. Look at how the validity is counted on the official page and choose your moment with your arrival date in mind. If your dates might move, read what happens when you change plans before you submit.

Keep a digital copy and a printed copy of the approval with your passport. Airline staff may ask to see it at check-in abroad, and immigration officers in India will look at it on arrival.

How the visa fits the Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is a loop of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and most travellers arrive and depart through Delhi. That keeps things simple, because you enter at one airport and your visa does not change as you move by road between the three cities. Add-ons such as Udaipur or Varanasi are domestic travel inside the country.

If you add Nepal, Bhutan or another neighbouring country, treat it as a separate border crossing with its own rules and check how re-entry to India is handled. For a Delhi, Agra and Jaipur journey with a flight home from Delhi, a single entry is the simplest shape.

If your flight lands late at night or you have a long layover, tell us. Our guide to the Delhi layover covers what is realistic, but your permission must allow you to leave the airport for any city visit.

On arrival, and who to ask

At the airport you will queue at immigration, show your passport and approval, and may be photographed and fingerprinted. Queues vary. Our driver waits outside arrivals with your name once you have collected your bags, and if your flight is delayed we adjust the pickup.

If anything about your visa is unclear, ask the official helpline or the embassy of India that serves your country. Ask in writing where you can, and keep the replies. For the days themselves, send us your dates on WhatsApp or through the enquiry form once your permission is approved, and we will plan the Delhi, Agra and Jaipur days around your arrival.

Questions

People also ask

Can I get a visa on arrival in India?
That depends on your passport and on current rules, and arrangements have changed over the years. We cannot confirm it for your nationality. Check the official Indian government visa portal and your own government's travel advice before you book flights, and assume you need permission arranged in advance unless the official sources say otherwise.
How far ahead should I apply for an Indian visa?
Well ahead of your flight. Processing times vary and are not guaranteed, so a safe approach is to apply as soon as your dates are fixed. Do not apply so early that the permission expires before you land. Read how validity is counted on the official page and plan around your arrival date.
Is my passport valid enough for India?
Your passport needs to be valid for a set period beyond your arrival and have blank pages, but the exact requirement is set by current rules. Confirm it on the official visa portal and your own government's travel advice. If the passport is close to expiring, renewing it before you apply is usually easier.
Do I need a separate visa for Agra and Jaipur?
No. You enter India once, normally at Delhi, and travel by road between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur on the same permission. Check that your permission allows the number of entries you need if you plan to leave and re-enter India, for example for a side trip to a neighbouring country.
Can you help me apply for my visa?
We are a tour team, not an immigration service, so we cannot apply for you or advise which category fits. Use the official Indian government visa portal and your own government's travel advice. Once your permission is approved, send us your arrival details and we will plan your Delhi, Agra and Jaipur days around them.
What should I carry in my hand luggage for immigration?
Keep your passport, your visa approval, your accommodation details for the first night and your onward flight information together, with printed copies as well as digital ones. Officers may ask about your stay. Having the details ready makes the queue quicker, and it saves hunting through your phone after a long flight.
