After you clear immigration, collect your bags and pass customs, your driver meets you in the arrivals area, usually holding a name board. The drive to a central hotel commonly takes anywhere from under an hour to well over, depending on traffic and the hour. Treat arrival day as a rest day and let the first evening be quiet.
Landing in Delhi can be a lot after a long flight: crowds, noise, new smells and the first taste of Indian traffic. A private pickup takes much of that away, because someone is waiting for you and a car is ready.
This page describes what a typical arrival looks like with a private driver. It is general guidance rather than a set of operational promises, since airports, terminals and procedures change and every flight is different.
What the arrival process looks like at Delhi airport
After landing, you walk to immigration, where officers check your passport and visa. Queues vary by time of day and by how many flights have landed together, so it can take a short while or a long one. Fill in any required forms before you reach the desk if your airline hands them out.
Next comes baggage reclaim, where you collect your bags from the carousel for your flight. Then you pass through customs. Most visitors with ordinary luggage use the green channel, but declare anything you must declare. Rules on what you can bring change, so check official customs guidance before you pack.
Only after you exit customs do you reach the arrivals hall, where drivers and families wait. Allow time for all of these steps. Even on a good day, the journey from the aircraft door to the exit takes a while.
Terminals and procedures at Delhi airport change over time, so treat this as a general picture and follow the signs and staff on the day. The airline's crew will usually also tell you where to go on arrival.
Where you meet your driver
Your driver waits in the public arrivals area, just outside the customs exit, usually with a name board. Most drivers stand in a line of boards, so look for your name. Before you travel, we share the driver's name and contact so you know who to look for.
If you cannot find the driver, stay in the arrivals area and use the contact details you were given. A local SIM or airport wifi helps, and you can usually message by phone app. It is wise to download the key numbers before you fly.
If your flight is delayed, let us know or check that your flight number was shared with us. Drivers generally monitor flights, but telling us about changes is the safest approach.
Do not worry if you feel a little lost for the first few minutes. It is normal after a long flight, and walking slowly while you take in the arrivals hall is perfectly fine. Your driver is used to guests who are tired, hungry and still adjusting to the noise.
How long it takes to reach your hotel
Delhi traffic varies a great deal. A late night arrival can mean an easy run into the city, while a morning or evening arrival can mean heavy congestion. As a rough guide, hotels in central Delhi and the airport area are often within an hour in clear traffic, and longer when roads are busy.
Add time for the airport itself, since exiting may take an hour or more after landing. A realistic plan is to allow several hours between touchdown and arriving at the hotel, and not to plan anything for the same evening.
Fog in winter can also slow the roads and affect arrivals, so keep a margin.
Delhi's peak hours can be heavy on the main roads, particularly in the morning and early evening. Night arrivals often have the quickest drive. If you are staying out of the centre, tell us so we can give you a more accurate idea of the route and timing.
Customs, SIM cards and money on arrival
Bring your passport and visa documents in hand luggage. If you need cash, you can use an ATM in the arrivals area or exchange a small amount, though you rarely need much on the first evening. Tipping and small purchases are covered in other guides.
Local SIM cards are available at the airport for visitors who meet the identification rules. It is often easier to arrange connectivity through your home provider before you leave, or use an eSIM. Check what works best for your phone.
Your driver will not expect you to sort any of this out quickly. Ask them to wait while you sort out whatever you need.
If you have a connecting flight booked separately or a hotel check in time that does not match your arrival, mention this when we plan. Early arrivals sometimes need to wait for a room, and we can discuss options such as a late checkout the day before or a quiet place to rest.
The first evening: rest, not sightseeing
After a long flight, rest is the best use of arrival evening. A shower, a simple meal and an early night will pay off the next day. Dehydration and jet lag are real, so drink water and avoid heavy meals late.
If you land in the morning and feel awake, a gentle afternoon outing can work, but avoid scheduling anything you cannot cancel. Your driver can adjust to how you feel.
The next day, your journey begins in earnest. Our guide to planning a trip from the USA, UK or Australia has more on managing jet lag, and our guide to private drivers explains what to expect on the road.
A small thing that helps: keep a bottle of water and a light snack in your hand luggage, since the walk through immigration and customs can be longer than you expect and the hotel is still some way off.
Why a private pickup helps on arrival
It removes the need to negotiate transport, look for a prepaid counter, or work out where to go while tired. You walk out, find your driver, and get into an air-conditioned car.
It also means the plan is already set. Your driver knows your hotel, your first morning's timing, and the days ahead. We discuss all of this when we plan, and rates are on request once we know your dates.
If your flight times change, tell us as early as possible so your pickup can be adjusted.
On departure, your driver will take you back to the airport in good time. We usually suggest leaving earlier than you think you need to, since traffic and security checks can take longer than the map suggests.
Whatever time you land, the aim is the same: a calm first few hours, a comfortable bed and the knowledge that the rest of the journey is already looked after. We confirm the pickup details with you before you travel, including the name of your driver and how to reach us.
