Yes. The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday, because the mosque beside the mausoleum is used for weekly congregational prayer. It is open on the other six days. If you land in Agra on a Friday, spend it on the fort, the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh, and see the Taj on Saturday morning.
This is one of the most common planning mistakes in North India. A traveller builds a tight three day route, the Agra stop falls on a Friday, and the main reason for the trip is behind a locked gate. It is easy to avoid once you know.
Here is how the Friday closure works, what is still open in Agra, and how to arrange the days so the Taj never lands on the wrong one.
Why the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays
The Taj Mahal complex includes a working mosque on its western side. On Fridays the mosque is used for the midday congregational prayer, and the complex is kept clear of tourists so that local worshippers can attend. This is a long standing arrangement, and it is not a rest day for the monument or its staff.
Because of this, the closure is firm. There is no special ticket, no private entry, and no early slot for visitors on a Friday. Anyone who offers you one should be treated with caution. Plan on the monument being closed on that day.
Which days is the Taj Mahal open?
The Taj Mahal is open from Saturday to Thursday. It opens around sunrise and closes in the evening, before sunset. Exact opening and closing times follow the season and can change, so we confirm them when we plan your visit rather than quote a fixed hour.
There are also occasional full moon night viewings, usually for a few nights each month. They are not held on Fridays. They follow their own booking rules, and the arrangements shift from month to month, so treat them as an extra rather than something to build the trip on.
Public holidays and security events can sometimes affect access on short notice. A flexible schedule and a local team that checks the day before is the safest way to handle that.
What to do in Agra on a Friday
Friday is a good day for the rest of the city, and in some ways a better day for it, because the other monuments are open and the crowd that would be at the Taj is spread out.
Agra Fort is the obvious start. It is a large red sandstone fortress on the river, and from its walls there is a view of the Taj in the distance. The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, sometimes called the Baby Taj, is a delicate marble tomb across the river and is usually calm. Mehtab Bagh, the garden on the far bank, gives a view of the Taj from behind and is a gentle place for the late afternoon.
You can also spend the day on Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned Mughal capital outside Agra, or on the food and bazaar side of the city. A licensed guide helps you link these into a day that does not feel like a second best.
If you are short of time, Friday also works well for the markets and old streets of Agra, which are busy and full of colour. A food stop for the local sweets or the famous pethas is an easy way to fill an hour between sights.
How to plan your route around the closure
The simplest rule is to check which day of the week you will be in Agra before you book anything else. If you are coming from Delhi on a Thursday, you can visit the Taj that evening or the next morning only if the next morning is not Friday. So a Thursday arrival with a Friday morning plan will not work.
A Golden Triangle route can be run in either direction, and Agra can sit in the middle or at the start. Switching the order of cities by a day is usually all it takes. If you travel Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, you can move Jaipur first and arrive in Agra on a Saturday. A private journey makes this easy because the car and driver go where the plan goes.
For a day trip from Delhi, choose any day but Friday. For an overnight stay, make sure your morning at the Taj is not a Friday.
If your only day in Agra is a Friday
It happens, and it is not a disaster. You can still see the Taj from outside the gates, from Mehtab Bagh across the river, and from the walls of Agra Fort. These views are real and quiet, and many guests find that the sight of the monument from a distance is worth the trip.
If it is possible to stay one extra night, do so. A Saturday morning at opening is the best consolation, and an early flight or train out of Agra is rarely hard to rearrange when the plan is flexible.
If it is not possible, we would sooner say plainly that you will not enter the Taj on that trip than let you chase a loophole. We then shape the day around the other monuments and the sunset view from the garden.
Tickets, entry and the weekly rhythm
Tickets are bought for a specific date. Because the monument is closed on Fridays, a ticket for a Friday does not exist. If you hold a ticket and your plans shift, the new date has to be a day when the Taj is open.
We handle tickets as part of a private journey, so you do not queue or work out the portal yourself. Our page on how Taj Mahal tickets work explains the system in detail. Our page on sunrise versus sunset helps you choose the hour once the day is fixed.
A sample plan that avoids the Friday
Suppose you land in Delhi on a Wednesday and have four days. A simple plan is Delhi on Wednesday, the drive to Agra on Thursday with the Taj in the late afternoon, and Fatehpur Sikri or the fort on Friday morning before moving on to Jaipur. You see the Taj on a day it is open, and Friday is spent on the rest of Agra.
If you arrive on a Thursday, reverse the idea: begin in Jaipur or Delhi, and reach Agra on Friday to see the fort and Mehtab Bagh, then spend Saturday morning at the Taj. A private car and driver make this reordering easy because nobody else's departure time is involved.
When we plan a journey, we check the weekday of every city before we fix the order, so the Taj never lands on the closed day by accident.
