Day by day

How the days go

Day1

Agra in a day

Your driver and guide meet you at your hotel around eight, after breakfast.

  • The first stop is the Taj Mahal, which is best in the morning when the marble is cool and the light is soft.
  • Your guide walks you from the great gateway through the gardens to the platform, explaining the inlay, the calligraphy and the story of Mumtaz Mahal.
  • Allow about two hours and wear shoes that are easy to remove.
  • From there the car drives a short way to Agra Fort, a red sandstone palace city where you move through courtyards and marble halls, ending at a balcony looking along the river towards the Taj.
  • Break for lunch in a restaurant that suits your taste; this is a good time for an hour of rest.
  • In the afternoon the car crosses the river to Itimad-ud-Daulah, a small tomb with fine marble screens and painted panels, and a calm riverside garden.
  • If you still have energy, the day ends at Mehtab Bagh, a garden across the river from the Taj where the building glows at dusk.
  • The Taj is closed on Fridays, so the plan is shifted if that is your day.

Note. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so the order of days may shift. December and January fog can flatten a sunrise.

Practical

Good to know

  • The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays; on that day we would reorder the sights and replace the Taj with a different visit.
  • Summer afternoons are hot, so the plan puts walking in the morning and late afternoon.
  • Winter mornings can be foggy, which sometimes delays views of the Taj.
  • Wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and bring a hat and water.

Questions

Good to know

Can I see everything in Agra in one day?
You can see the three main sights comfortably: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah. There are more things in and around the city, such as Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri, but a single day is best kept to a few.
What if I am here on a Friday?
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. We would build the day around Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh and the old city instead, and suggest a different day for the Taj.
Is there time for lunch and a rest?
Yes. The plan includes a proper lunch in the middle of the day and an hour of rest if you wish. We can suggest places that suit your tastes.
Can we add sunset at Mehtab Bagh?
Yes, it is a natural end to the day. The garden faces the Taj from across the river and the light on the marble is gentle in the last hour before sunset.
