A couple planning a comfortable India journey should choose a private car and guide, hotels by category (five-star or heritage), a slow pace of one main sight a day, a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal and at least one open afternoon. Leave room for rest, and plan around the Friday closure and the season.
A couple travelling together has an advantage that other groups rarely have: you can agree on one pace. That makes a private journey through Delhi, Agra and Jaipur easy to shape. It also means the small decisions, such as hotel category, early starts and free time, deserve some thought before you book anything.
This is a practical guide to those decisions, in the order we would raise them with you. It does not invent extras. Where something is possible but not confirmed, we say it can be discussed when we plan.
Start with the pace you actually enjoy
Before dates and hotels, talk about how you like to travel. Some couples enjoy full days and collapse happily at night. Others need a slow breakfast, a rest at midday and an early dinner. Neither is wrong, but the second pattern suits India better, because heat, noise and distance are tiring in any season.
A good rule is one main sight in the morning, a long lunch, a rest and then one lighter activity in the late afternoon. That rhythm is easy to keep with a private car and driver, because the day does not depend on a group timetable. If you would like to stretch it further, we can suggest a gentler pace with more nights in each city.
Tell us honestly if one of you finds heat or crowds harder than the other. We plan around the person who tires first, and both of you enjoy the day more as a result. A couple who are both a little tired are better company than one who is pushing through.
Choose the hotel category together
For most couples the choice is between five-star hotels and heritage palaces. Five-star gives consistent rooms, quiet grounds and easy service. Heritage gives character, courtyards and a hotel that becomes part of the story, with more variation from room to room.
We arrange hotels by category only, and we choose the actual properties with you for your dates. Many couples mix them: a five-star where they want ease, a heritage stay where they want atmosphere. Our page on heritage palaces versus five-star hotels sets out the trade-offs in more detail.
Pass on anything that matters, such as a ground floor room or a bath rather than a shower. Say early if you want a quiet room, a particular view, a pool or a garden. Some of these can be confirmed hotel by hotel, and some cannot, so we tell you which.
Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, done calmly
The Taj Mahal at sunrise is the part of the journey most couples look forward to. Plan it for a morning when you have slept in Agra, not for a morning after a long drive. The gates open around dawn, the light is soft, and the crowds are thinner at the start of the day than later.
Remember the practical points. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so your dates need to account for that. In December and January fog can flatten the sunrise, and on some mornings the building is barely visible. We plan a second chance where we can, and we tell you honestly that fog is a risk in those months.
After the visit, return to the hotel for a slow breakfast and a rest. The fort can wait until the afternoon. Taking the morning in this order keeps the day soft, and the second half of it unhurried.
Protect an open afternoon
The most valuable thing in a couple's plan is often an afternoon with nothing in it. In Jaipur, for example, the morning at Amber Fort can be followed by lunch and then nothing at all: the hotel, a walk in the garden, a book, or a stroll to a nearby street if you feel like it.
An open afternoon also protects you from the small failures of any journey, such as a late start, a long queue or a bad night. If everything is scheduled, those problems pile up. If time is left free, they disappear into it.
We would rather you ask for fewer sights and enjoy each one. Free time can still be organised for you if you wish: a workshop, a quiet walk or a meal can be discussed when we plan. We do not promise specific extras in advance.
The route and the season
The classic route is Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and we usually suggest five to eight days for couples who want an easy pace. The drive between Delhi and Agra is about four hours, and between Agra and Jaipur it is about five, with stops on the way. We can add Rajasthan or other places if you have more time.
The cooler months, from October to March, are the most comfortable. Summer is hot, and the monsoon brings humidity and rain, though it also brings quiet and green landscapes. Our guide to the best time for the Golden Triangle explains each season in more detail.
Flights between cities are not included in our journeys. If you arrive late or leave early, tell us your flight times and we plan around them.
How we plan with you
We begin with a conversation: your dates, your arrival time, how you like to travel, and anything you wish to avoid. Then we put forward a draft by city and day, with hotel category, sights and rest built in. You change it until it fits. No payment is taken until your plan is confirmed.
If you would like a starting point, our Luxury Golden Triangle with five-star hotels is a six day private journey with a five-star hotel in each city, the Taj Mahal at first light and an open Jaipur afternoon. Our honeymoon journey is another option for couples. Write to us on WhatsApp or through the enquiry form, and tell us how you would like the days to feel.
