Five days that pair the Taj Mahal with dawn on the Ganges at Varanasi. Day one goes straight to Agra from Delhi, day two returns, and the Varanasi flight on day three is not included. It is a short break for guests who want two very different faces of northern India in a few days.

Day by day
How the days go
Day1
Delhi to Agra
Drive: four hours
Your driver meets you at Delhi airport or your hotel and heads south on the expressway to Agra, roughly three and a half to four hours with a tea stop.
You reach Agra around midday, check in and have lunch.
In the afternoon, your guide takes you to Agra Fort, the red sandstone fortress on the Yamuna.
Walk through the audience halls and the marble mosque, and stop at the balcony where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking toward the Taj.
Late afternoon light is warm on the stone.
Dinner is early, since you leave before dawn tomorrow.
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so if tomorrow falls on one, we swap the order and visit the Taj today instead.
Day2
The Taj and back to Delhi
Leave the hotel before sunrise to arrive at the Taj Mahal when the gates open.
Tickets are arranged for you.
Your guide leads you through the red gateway and explains the building, the garden and the inlay as the marble turns from grey to gold.
Fog in December and January can flatten the sunrise, and your guide will warn you if it looks poor.
After a long breakfast, you may visit Itimad-ud-Daulah or the Mehtab Bagh garden.
Then your driver takes you back to Delhi, roughly three and a half to four hours.
You arrive in the late afternoon.
Rest, and prepare for tomorrow's flight to Varanasi, which is not included.
Day3
Delhi to Varanasi
Your driver takes you to Delhi airport in the morning for your flight to Varanasi.
Flights are not included, and the flying time is roughly an hour and a half.
Your local driver meets you on arrival and takes you into the city, roughly an hour from the airport, depending on traffic.
Check in and rest through the hottest hours.
Late in the afternoon, your guide takes you to the river.
Walk along the ghats, see the old buildings rising above the water and take a boat to watch the evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
It is loud and crowded, with fire, bells and chanting.
Dress modestly, keep your valuables close and expect to be moved along by the crowd.
Day4
Varanasi at dawn
The day begins before sunrise with a boat ride on the Ganges.
A rowing boat carries you slowly along the ghats while the light grows, past pilgrims bathing, priests under umbrellas and people practising yoga on the steps.
You also pass Manikarnika, the main cremation ghat.
Watch quietly, and do not photograph the pyres.
Return to the hotel for breakfast.
Later in the morning, your guide leads you through the old lanes, past small temples, sweet shops and silk weavers.
Lunch is in town.
After a rest, you may visit Sarnath, roughly thirty minutes away, where the Buddha is said to have given his first teaching.
The Dhamek Stupa and the museum are the main sights.
Day5
Departure
After breakfast, your driver takes you to Varanasi airport or railway station for your onward journey.
Allow about an hour for the drive, and more if the flight is early, because traffic in the old city can be slow.
Flights are not included.
If you have a free hour, your guide can take you for a last walk by the river or to a silk shop in the lanes, which can be discussed when we plan.
Your guide checks the timing with you the evening before, so there is no pressure on the last day.
Varanasi in the morning is a good place to say goodbye to the journey.
Pack the night before so the morning is calm, and keep a copy of your onward booking where your driver can see it.
Note. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so the order of days may shift. December and January fog can flatten a sunrise.
Practical
Good to know

Varanasi is crowded and intense, with open cremation ghats, animals in the lanes and early starts.

Questions
Good to know
Is five days enough for the Taj and Varanasi?
It covers the main experiences of both, with a full day for each. It involves a lot of movement: two long drives and a flight. If you want a slower pace, ask about adding a night in Agra or Varanasi.
Why return to Delhi between Agra and Varanasi?
Varanasi is reached by flight from Delhi, not by road from Agra. Returning to Delhi on day two gives you the evening to rest before the morning flight.
What should I wear in Varanasi?
Cover shoulders and knees, wear shoes you can slip off at temples and bring a light layer for the cold river mornings. Avoid carrying valuables onto the ghats.
What if the Taj Mahal is closed on my day?
The Taj is closed on Fridays. We adjust the sequence when we plan so that the Taj visit falls on a day it is open.
