A day through the quieter Mughal monuments of Agra, without the Taj Mahal itself. It suits repeat visitors and Friday travellers, and it moves from Akbar's tomb at Sikandra to the old bazaars and a riverside garden at the end of the day.

Day by day
How the days go
Day1
Tombs, gardens and bazaars
Your driver and guide collect you after breakfast, and the car heads first to Sikandra, where Akbar's tomb stands among lawns and red sandstone gateways.
Allow around an hour for the courtyards and the tall gate.
Next comes Itimad-ud-Daulah, a small marble tomb on the Yamuna whose inlaid panels reward a slow look, followed by Chini ka Rauza, a tomb known for its glazed tilework, and Ram Bagh, one of the earliest Mughal gardens in India.
Lunch is a long, unhurried break at a restaurant suited to your tastes.
In the afternoon your guide walks you around the Jama Masjid and the old bazaars near Kinari Bazaar, where the lanes are best explored on foot.
The day closes at Mehtab Bagh, where the evening light falls across the river.
Because the Taj is not in the plan, this works on a Friday, and the Taj can be added on another day.
Expect to be back at the hotel around early evening, with a gentle pace throughout.
If a particular tomb or garden appeals more than the others, tell your guide and the time can be rebalanced on the day, since each site is a short drive from the next.
Note. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so the order of days may shift. December and January fog can flatten a sunrise.
Practical
Good to know
This journey works on a Friday, because the Taj Mahal is not part of it.
Sikandra and the garden tombs involve open ground, so bring a hat and water in the warmer months.
The old bazaars are busy and best walked in comfortable shoes with your guide.

Questions
Good to know
Why choose Agra without the Taj Mahal?
It suits guests who have already seen the Taj, or who are in town on a Friday when it is closed. The other Mughal sites are quieter and show a different side of the city.
Can we add the Taj Mahal later?
Yes. The Taj can be visited on another day of your stay, and we can plan the two days so that they do not repeat each other.
Which site is the most rewarding after the Taj?
Many guests enjoy Itimad-ud-Daulah for its detail and Sikandra for its scale. Your guide will shape the day around what interests you.
How much walking is involved?
Most of it is gentle, with short walks inside each site. The bazaar walk in the afternoon is the longest stretch and can be shortened if you prefer.
