Day by day
How the days go
Day1
Jaipur: Amber Fort and the old city
Your driver meets you at Jaipur airport or station and your guide joins at the hotel.
The morning is Amber Fort, the sandstone and marble citadel set into the hills north of the city.
Go early, before the tour groups, when the courtyards are quiet and the light is soft.
You can walk up or go by car, then explore the Sheesh Mahal, the mirror hall, and the zenana quarters with your guide.
On the way back the car stops at the Jal Mahal, floating in its lake, for a photograph.
After lunch, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar fill the afternoon.
The astronomical instruments at Jantar Mantar cast clear shadows around three, which is the best time to see them.
Wear comfortable shoes and carry water.
Day2
Jaipur: bazaars and the pink city
A looser day.
Start with the Hawa Mahal, the honeycombed pink facade, seen from the street in the morning light and from a cafe terrace opposite.
Your guide then takes you through the old city bazaars, the Johari Bazaar for jewellery and Bapu Bazaar for textiles, with time to stop for a lassi or a kachori.
Block-printing and miniature-painting workshops can be visited if you like, with no pressure to buy.
Lunch is at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit the Albert Hall Museum or rest at the hotel.
For the evening, Nahargarh Fort gives a wide view of the city as the lights come on.
Bring a light jacket for the breeze.
Day3
Jaipur to Udaipur
Drive: roughly six to seven hours
This is a long travel day, roughly six to seven hours of driving with breaks, so you leave early, around eight.
The road runs through Ajmer and then across the Aravalli foothills.
A midday stop is planned at a roadside restaurant with clean facilities.
If you want a sight on the way, the driver can stop at Chittorgarh Fort, the great hilltop fortress, though it adds two or three hours to the day, so decide when we plan.
You reach Udaipur in the late afternoon.
Check in to your five-star or heritage hotel, rest, and then take a short walk along the lake in the evening.
The city feels cooler and softer than Jaipur, and the old town is easy to explore on foot.
Day4
Udaipur: City Palace and the lake
Your guide meets you after breakfast for the City Palace, the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built on the shore of Lake Pichola.
Spend about two hours in the museum, the peacock courtyards, and the painted rooms, taking in the views from the terraces.
Then walk to Jagdish Temple and through the lanes of the old town, with stops at miniature-painting studios and small shops.
Lunch is at a rooftop restaurant with a lake view.
In the afternoon, rest, or visit the Saheliyon ki Bari garden, a quiet formal garden with fountains.
As the sun lowers, a boat ride on Lake Pichola passes the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir.
Tickets are arranged for you, and light is best around sunset.
Day5
Udaipur and departure
The last morning is flexible.
If your flight leaves late, there is time for a visit to the Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace, on a hill above the city, where the view of the lakes is wide, or a slow walk in the old lanes.
Your driver then takes you to Udaipur airport or station for your onward journey.
Flights are not included, so please tell us your flight time when we plan, and we will set the morning around it.
If you wish to continue to another city, the team can discuss a transfer by road.
Udaipur is a good place to end a trip, and your driver and guide will see you off.
Note. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so the order of days may shift. December and January fog can flatten a sunrise.
Practical
Good to know
The Jaipur to Udaipur drive is long, roughly six to seven hours with breaks. An early start keeps it comfortable.
Amber Fort is best early, before the day heats up and the crowds arrive.
October to March is the best season. Summer afternoons in both cities are very hot.
Boat rides on Lake Pichola depend on water levels, which can be low in the dry months.

Questions
Good to know
How long is the drive from Jaipur to Udaipur?
Roughly six to seven hours including a lunch break. You leave early so you arrive in time for an evening on the lake.
Can we stop at Chittorgarh on the way?
Yes, the driver can stop at Chittorgarh Fort, but it adds two or three hours, so it makes for a very long day. It is better added when we plan the dates.
Is five days enough for these two cities?
Two days each gives time for the main sights at a steady pace. If you like to linger, an extra night in either city can be discussed.
Does the journey include Agra or the Taj?
No. This is a Rajasthan-only plan. If you want the Taj Mahal added, we can build a longer route with Agra at the start.
