Day by day
How the days go
Day1
Fatehpur Sikri
Your driver collects you from your Agra hotel in the early morning, around eight, so you reach Fatehpur Sikri before the heat and the tour buses.
The drive is roughly an hour on a road lined with small villages and fields.
At the site your guide meets you and explains how Emperor Akbar built a new capital here in the sixteenth century and then left it after only a few years.
Walk first through the palace complex: the open courtyard game board, the Panch Mahal with its tiers of columns, and the palace of Jodha Bai.
The red sandstone is carved like wood, and the guide points out details most visitors miss.
Then go on to the Jama Masjid, a huge courtyard with the white marble tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti, where visitors tie threads on the screens.
Exit under the Buland Darwaza, a towering gateway.
Cover shoulders and knees, and bring a scarf and shoes that are easy to take off.
Expect to be back in Agra by early afternoon, ready for lunch and a rest.
Be aware that touts near the gate can be persistent; your guide keeps them at bay.
Note. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so the order of days may shift. December and January fog can flatten a sunrise.
Practical
Good to know
Plan about three to four hours at the site, plus roughly an hour each way by road.
Cover shoulders and knees for the mosque and tomb, and carry a scarf for the shrine.
Morning is cooler and quieter; the stone courtyards get very hot after midday.
Touts and souvenir sellers gather near the gate; your guide helps you move through.

Questions
Good to know
How far is Fatehpur Sikri from Agra?
About an hour by car, roughly forty kilometres. We usually leave in the morning so you are back in Agra by early afternoon.
Why was the city abandoned?
Akbar built it in the sixteenth century and moved the court away after about fourteen years. Reasons given include water shortage and changing military needs; your guide will explain the theories.
Can this be combined with the Taj Mahal?
Yes, many guests visit the Taj at sunrise and Fatehpur Sikri later in the morning. The Taj is closed on Fridays, but Fatehpur Sikri is open, so it is a good Friday choice.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, the courtyards give them room to run and the guide can tell the story of Akbar in simple terms. Bring hats and water, as there is little shade.
